Lyrics to Sopranos Theme Song

I suppose one of the first things that we need to have on the site is the actual Sopranos Theme Song lyrics. Here they are:

You woke up this morning
Got yourself a gun,
Mama always said you'd be
The Chosen One.

She said: You're one in a million
You've got to burn to shine,
But you were born under a bad sign,
With a blue moon in your eyes.

You woke up this morning
All the love has gone,
Your Papa never told you
About right and wrong.

But you're looking good, baby,
I believe you're feeling fine,(shame about it),
Born under a bad sign
With a blue moon in your eyes.

You woke up this morning
The world turned upside down,
Thing's ain't been the same
Since the Blues walked into town.

But you're one in a million
You've got that shotgun shine.
Born under a bad sign,
With a blue moon in your eyes.

When you woke up this morning,
When you woke up this morning,
When you woke up this morning,
You got yourself a gun.

Now you can sing along while you listen to the Sopranos Theme Song during the opening of the show.

  1. This is not the Soprano song lyrics. The correct lyrics would begin with the word "I" and not "you". The rest would be nodified to go along with that.
    And yes, You are welcome.

    1. You are not only an @$$, but you are also an ignorant one. The song is called " woke up this morning" by Alabama 3, and according to Jake Black (he wrote the song) the lyrics above are correct.

  2. You don't have to be snippy about it. (Oh, the word is "modified", not "nodified". And yes, you too are welcome."

  3. you are both wrong and you're both welcome. the correct lyrics are "woke up this morning".

  4. WHO CARES if one or both of you are Right, wrong or indifferent regarding the lyrics to "Sopranos" Theme song? Why are (we) "Splitting Hairs" and picking "Tit-for-tat" arguments over ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! When you guys get some REAL PROBLEMS... May GOD have MERCY on you!!

  5. Kellie, I agree. But to whomever, thanks for the words. It has helped.

  6. Yeah you are all wrong about the lyrics. I mean have you all even heard the song? There were some words that were totally left out.

  7. Whoever posted the first comment on the "Comment Site", saying that the sopranos theme song did not start with "you",but rather with "I",needs to kindly remove themselves from the comment site and recheck they selves. You may be referring to the "original song" itself, but the actual theme song to the A&E television series does start out with "You" and is referred to "You" throughout! Oh,and by the way You're Welcome!

    1. The Sopranos was not an A&E television series, dumb-ass. It was HBO. Yes, A&E ran reruns after the series ended on HBO, but that's it.

  8. actually, this would be the original lyrics.
they changed it to I later on, in fact go to:
    http://www.playlist.com/searchbeta/tracks#sopranos%20/all/1
play the third one down that isn't remixed, it says (1:37) for the length, i bet anything it matches the lyrics.

  9. Also, the actual band that wrote this song, they wrote it as you.
Not I. By the way, i believe it was alabama three who did the origional

  10. ahh....the intro song. still a sopranos favorite of mine after all these years!

  11. SO AFTER ALL THIS BACK AND FORTH...NO ONE REALLY HAS THE ANSWER TO THE CORRECT WORDS? GREAT

  12. If you knew the words to the song, why did you look it up?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Which television show you talkin about?

    ReplyDelete
  14. The original song sung by the band A3-refers to everything in first person...(I woke up this morning..) Which is on one of their albums. The band changed the words for the Sopranos...and changed the "I" to "you". So if you buy the Sopranos soundtrack it will have the "you" version. Two different versions sung by the same band.

  15. Not to jump into turbulent waters, but I swear I hear Tony Soprano aka James Galdolfini, singing in the chorus! LOL

  16. It's got to be You and not I. The lyrics said "Got yourself a gun" not "got MYSELF a gun".

  20. Thank you for the lyrics!!!!!

  21. The song is best known as the opening theme music for the HBO drama series The Sopranos (which used the "Chosen One Mix" that has lyrics in the second person instead of the first).

  22. The most SUCK-ASS thing about that show, was the last episode. What a way to end an historic piece of television entertainment! Just think they paid some writer way too much, for that dissapointing conclusion. Tony Soprano was a low life merciless murderer, who should of paid with his life, for the atonement of his many victims!!!

  23. I'd say whomever wrote that last comment, uses the KINGS ENGLISH,with the eloquence it so truely deserves. Must be a well educated "COWBOYS" fan!!! "HOW 'BOUT THEM GOD-DAMN COWBOYS"YEEEEEEE-HAWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Thanks, I always sing along and have to make up lyrics as I go long. Thanks again

  25. All I wanted to find out was who sang the theme song, then someone took the time to provide lyrics (thank you) and then I watched the comments spiral out of control. Omg! How hilarious!! I love the Sept 28 2012 comments! Too funny!

  28. Ending did suck. No movie either c'mon what the hell. Left us all hanging here. Worse ending possible. Total loss of revenue for HBO

  29. I disagree. I loved the ending. I thought all of them sitting at the table putting those crackers on their tounges looked like when Catholics are in church taking communion. And the song, Don't Stop Believein', like the message was to the Soprano family, "Don't stop thinking you're all o.k. and there's nothing wrong with the way your family functions and the way you have chosen to live." I read a lot of stuff into that last episode. I loved it. And the daughter trying to park all the while, and we're watching thinking something is going to happen but it's just showing how they still have the mundane stuff to deal with just like the rest of us. I loved that show. Really miss it.

    1. i always thought the ending as silly and disappointing but after reading your comment i now understand and completely agree with you. i too was expecting something to happen but maybe the ending was meant to remind us that after everything they are just another family going through the motions and who love onion rings. i miss the show too.

  34. Oops. Sent my last comment too many times, yes?! And I have since remembered it was onion rings that they were all placing on their tongues, not crackers. Food was always a theme. Over-indulgence. Tony was always trying to satisfy himself in some way.

  35. Thanks. A little validation is always nice.

  36. Wow, you guys. Tony was obviously killed in the last episode. The man in the Member's Only jacket comes out of the bathroom and shoots him in the head. That's why the screen goes black and silent.

Through the whole last scene there is a pattern. The bell on the door rings. We see Tony look up at the door. We see, from Tony's viewpoint, someone come in the door. At the end, you hear the bell (Meadow coming in). You see Tony look up. You see, from Tony's viewpoint -- nothing. because he is dead.

A number of times (repeated in the last episode) Tony and others say things like, "you always have to watch out," "you never hear the shot that kills you" and "I think everything just goes black."

That said, it was definitely part of the idea to show that this family is just going on about life as if everything was normal.

  37. Watch out for the Block Watch
Woke up this mourning and I got myself a gun
Joined the block watch and I got myself a gun
See a black man walking and I got myself a gun
I started stalking and I got myself a gun
He started talking and I got myself a gun
We started pushing and I got myself a gun
We started fighting and I got myself a gun
When I had enough I shot him with my gun
Now for the rest of my life I’ll be paying for that gun

  39. Thanks for the info. I need to watch that last episode again. I obviously have forgotten some stuff, or missed some stuff. I do still wonder though if he actually was supposedly shot in that last moment, or if the writers were just showing how he'll always have to be on the lookout, for his entire existence, and so maybe that is his penance, never being able to let his guard down.

Got a blue moon in your eyes, yeah

You say… you woke up this morning
